When is tooth extraction recommended?
While it's best to preserve as many natural teeth as possible, your dentist may recommend a tooth extraction if you have severe tooth decay, advanced gum disease, impacted wisdom teeth, crowded teeth, or a fractured tooth.
What is tooth extraction like?
During a tooth extraction, your dentist numbs the area and then uses specialized dental tools to loosen and remove the tooth from your gum socket. If necessary, they may make small incisions in the gums to access your tooth more easily. Once the tooth is out, your dentist will clean the socket and stitch it up if necessary.
Will tooth extraction hurt?
During the tooth extraction procedure, you shouldn't feel any pain as your dentist administers a local anesthetic or may provide sedation. Once complete, you may feel discomfort the following days after the procedure, which can be mitigated with over-the-counter pain medication and rest.
Is there a painless tooth extraction?
Tooth extractions can be more comfortable if you elect to receive a local anesthetic and/or sedation anesthesia before the procedure.
How long does tooth extraction take?
Generally, tooth extractions only take 20-40 minutes to complete. The time it takes to extract a tooth depends on how severely the tooth is impacted or fractured.
